Feb 2014: Visit on Immersive and Creative Technologies LabStudents following the 2013 "Monument Surveying" course visited the Immersive and Creative Technologies Lab, of Dr. Charris Poullis. Research Associates in the lab explained to the students the research projects they undertake and demostrated the use of the in house developed structured light scanner, the ZScan handheld laser scanner. The students also had the opportunity to "dive" on Mazotos shipwreck using the VRCave's 3D environment and 3D glasses.

Jul 2013: HERICT 2013 in Rhodes completed...
... and everyone will miss it.
It was a wonderful and revealing experience, in many aspects, for all those who participated.
Many thanks to Kotsia Symeou, Vriona Charalambous, Maria Roti, and Toni Panagiotou, who participated and successfully represented CUT in this action.

Team B1
Team B1 has been assigned the task of flight planning and image acquisition using the CUT's AUAV.
Over the 3rd and 4th field days we did 3 flights with RGB and 2 flights with NIF camera, from different heights for experimentation. During the following days the team managed to process photos from 2 flights and produce DSM and orthophoto maps using control points measured from team B5.

Jun 2013: Summer field training 2013, concluded!
Students following the Surveying and Geomatics undergraduate course, at the end of the second year are going on field exercises for 15 days to measure and create a complete plot of an area designated by their supervisors. The training is based on realistic scenarios as they have to prepare a detailed plot in the given time, without any predefined schedule. They are provided with two fixed points in the local geodetic coordinate system in the vicinity of the designated area and they are responsible to select, document, measure and solve all necessary traverses.
Students were separated in groups of 7 and they organized their time and activities by themselves. This usually means that during the last nights they make shifts to finalize the plot... On the right you may see a few photos mostly from one group. At least it seems that they had fun !! |

Feb 2013: Students' visit on Limassol Castle
As part of the class "Monument surveying" POM 436, the geomatic postgraduate students visited Limassol Castle. Limassol castle has been selected for field measurements and practice. Each year students of the class will survey part of it, using combination of advanced laser scanning and photogrammetric techniques. The plots, sections, orthophotos and 3D photorealistic model of the external of the castle will lead to a high accuracy complete external survey of the monument, which will be given to the Dept. of Antiquities.
Dr. M. Olympios, Lecturer of History and Western Art in University of Cyprus, explained to the students the history of the monument as well as phases of the building construction, and subsequent destructions and reconstructions. Being able to understand the monument, allows for the surveyor to get a better insight of the final user's needs and select the appropriate techniques to achieve best possible results

Field coursework with students from University of Cyprus.
During April 2011, students from University of Cyprus, under Prof. Stella Demesticha, visited and examined 'graffiti' (carvings) on church walls. Documentation of such work is only possible using 1:1 sketch drawings, with little information, or using photogrammetric techniques, combining accuracy and photographic quality. A demo of latter techniques was given by Dr. Skarlatos, lecturer in CUT.
Developements (over cylindrical surfaces) and orthophotographs were produced and shown to the students later on.
