Establishing a 3D network in EAC's main power plant.
Students G. Stavrou and C. Constantinides, as part of their diploma thesis and under the supervision of Dr. G. Pantazis from NTUA, established a high accuracy network in Vasiliko power plant. The aim is to monitor several establishments in the area as well as steep slopes of gravel on the west side. Measurements were done using GPS as well as total station and level. The results among the two solutions were compared and the final documentation of the whole process, was recorded within EAC's GIS.
Standard deviations on final results varied from 0.1-1.2mm horizontally and 2.4-3.0mm vertically.
Below you may see photos and screenshots from the two diploma thesis of G. Stavrou and C. Constantinides.

Deformation analysis in steel structure, after severe explosion in Mari, next to EAC's main power plant (2011).
After the devastation explosion in the nearby nautical base, the main power station in Cyprus sustained severe damage. Reconstruction started immediately, but prior to replacement it is necessary to asses damaged structures (or parts of them) in order to conserve time, money and man power.
After the initial surveying processes and precise measurement of a network, scanning took place over two scan stations. No alignment was necessary since station positions were known apriori (by total station network). After laborious processing of the point cloud in sections, the systematic deformation of the steel columns became apparent.
After the successful completion of the pilot project, a second scanning fieldwork has also taken place on another filter structure and more might follow.
In collaboration with EAC's surveying officer, George Stavrou.
